The Advantage Alexandria program began in October 2007 as a discussion by the Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission (AAEDC) Board of Directors and staff about the need to build connectivity and community strength in the Alexandria area. Following a number of consultations with the Center for Community Stewardship, the AAEDC began a series of conversations with citizens and community leaders throughout the region to determine if there was interest in such a program. The response was overwhelmingly positive.

After hearing about the possibility of a program that would act as a catalyst for community growth and vibrancy for Alexandria and its surrounding communities, nearly 35 individuals stepped forward to form the Alexandria Area Community Stewards group. Since its initial retreats in May 2008, the
Advantage Alexandria program has been gaining impressive momentum, powered by the excitement and commitment of its stewards.
Advantage Alexandria is not alone. Center for Community Stewardship staff also helped to initiate Bemidji Leads!, Progress Park Rapids and the Seventh Generation Initiative.
